Still under construction — but watch me build it out.
Pillar 02 · Protean uncertainty

The problemfights back.

The problem reshapes itself in response to every move you make against it. There is no solving it.

Two kinds of hard

Some problems are hard because they are big. You grind, you compute, you get there. The structure sits still while you work on it.

Protean problems are hard in a different way. They change shape the moment you act. Your move becomes part of the problem. The thing you were solving is gone before the solution lands.

Until the god speaks

The name comes from Proteus, the sea god who knew every answer and would shift through fire, flood and beast to avoid giving one. Pin him long enough and he finally speaks the truth. Most hard problems are not Proteus. They hold still. The ones that decide your life rarely do.

A market you trade reacts to your trade. A reputation you defend changes with the defending. The opponent adapts. There is no fixed target to hit, only a moving one that watches your aim.

How you live with it

You do not beat a protean problem. You stay in a position where its next move cannot end you and where its surprises can still pay you. You keep your footing while the ground keeps changing.

That is the whole skill. Reading what shape is coming next and holding a stance loose enough to move with it.

Every move you make rewrites the problem you were making it against.
